What a lovely post. I just realized today that I hadn't taken it fully in. Really made me want to go home & hug on my sweet bruiser, and pray that next time I get just as lucky with a sweet (ha!) child.

Kids, no matter the gender, are just plain unpredictable nowadays, and thankfully so. My daughter refused to wear dresses long before she started refusing vegetables. My son, a hulking 9-year-old left-winger, shares my shoe size, and therefore, my shoes (girlie or not)and requires me to snuggle him and each of his 7 teddy bears before bed. Perhaps this is because I dressed them both in purple or green as babies. But I think it's their fun little way to express their own brand of individuality by slipping out of greater society's prescribed gender norms. Burgeoning rebels? If the alternative is to have 2 kids punched out of generic cook cutters, I can dig it.

Happily, my results are:

One daughter who can think for herself and is neither shrill, nor adorned in frills.

One son who is very manly, but also sensitive and imaginative.

My advice then is, sure give your girl a doll, but give her the opportunity to teach that doll how to drive a Tonka land-mover. Give a boy some Matchbox cars, but tell him to pick up Polly Pocket and get some ice cream. Teach your girl to fish. Teach your boy to bake a cake. Then just let them be themselves.

Cheers,

Dinah

p.s. I added your site to my friends list on my blog. Hope that's cool!
