The first year is always the best, there will be other years you may remember better. But the first year, with all of it's ups and downs, first roll, first teeth, first word... also followed by perhaps the first all night crying fit, the first cold, the first fall, is something else entirely. Happy birthday lil man! Forget the marines, THIS is the hardest job you will ever love.

Happy birthday to him! He's lovely. The idea that one's newborn baby will eat CAKE on their first birthday is just too huge to imagine when they're new.

I am weepy anyway, but your loving tribute to O on the celebration of his birth brought me to tears again. A belated & most heartfelt birthday hug from the boy & I to both of you.

You said this: "i love nursing you down into fluttering sleep, this almost-gone shadow of what already feels like your long-distant babyhood, the suck of your open mouth. i love the steps you are taking away from me, and the ones that bring you hurling yourself back into my arms", and I said, this: "Yes yes yes..."

It's one of the most delightful (and simultaneously heartbreaking) parts of parenthood, how their growing and burgeoning independence takes them away. But luckily, they always return, because they need us with as much fervor as we need them.

Happy birthday to Oscar, and thank you for sharing such a lovely celebration with us.

Happy Birthday O!
A beautiful post, Bon...I, too, love the line "I get to open you everyday..." I usually skip to my childs bedroom in the am, I can't wait to give him the first hug of the day!
What a wonderful year.

Lovely, lovely, lovely--the writing and the boy and his mama. When stream of consciousness is done well, as here, we readers get to join in your flow. What fun to ebb with you!
