The post that you linked to in #3 was the first one I ever read here. So touching, even reading it again now. Tears and all.

And RE: memes. I don’t even know how to pronounce that (I tend to pronounce words that are not immediately recognizable, or shortened words, in Spanish first); and I don’t even know what the word itself means or what it was shortened from.

I know, for shame. Yet I insist on calling myself a blogger (a meta-blogger even!) all the same.

Hmm, I’ve always thoughts a meme was exactly what you’ve described – some sort of format to fill in for a blog post that shares something to your readers. And you know what? I’ve been blogging since 1999. (Most of those blog entries have been removed from my site – back then before people were getting googled by their colleagues I felt a bit less restrained in what I said). So until someone who’s been blogging for more than 8 years tells me differently, wikipedia’s missing part of the story …

Oh, crap. Here I was, reading along, laughing at this witty post, blissfully ignorant and then, WHAM, tagged with a ~~chain letter~~ meme! ;)

Another one.

Not that I’m not happy. I’m so happy (it’s like receiving a check on the box marked “Yes” next to the penciled note, “Will you be my friend?”) but I can tell you up front that one of the ways having an “audience” (don’t really like that term, but whatever) has changed the way I write is the STRESS. The self-imposed obligations of filling out memes and Word Wise Wednesdays and continuations of previous posts. But I’ll write all about that in my response.

Then again, Joe’s got a busy week gig-wise, so I also have the TIME. Yay!

And, honestly: “lie back and think of kittens”? You rock.

Well, since I haven’t been reading you for long I hadn’t read your post about Finn before. In fact, I hadn’t even known.

I thought it was an amazing essay and raw and brave all at the same time. I can’t tell you how sorry I am.

I think putting a real piece of yourself out there for people to accept or reject is where many of us cross the line from kind-of-blogger to part of the community.

I’m just so glad I found your blog.

(claps hand to mouth). agh. screw dawkins. memes only mean in context. genetics, structuralism, and formalism??? hogwash. how are people actually deploying and using the term in these spaces? do i smell etymological essentialism? put that in your philosophically destitute pipe and smoke it. (i kid! I keeeed!)

While I think he might be onto something–well, of course he is–I think what he might be missing is that THIS IS THE MEANS FOR US WOMEN BLOGGERS TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD (DAMMIT).

It *will* be interesting to see what might happen when this meme drifts out of context and community. We know we’re in a safe space with many of the women we write with. (God. I hope). Or maybe it will be dead in the water, which will be interesting in and of itself. Dum-de-dum.

Another note entirely–
Bon–it’s interesting to me how many times I read about the same experience you had–that it was that story of exposure and vulnerability, the one you were afraid to write, that really brought readers and a sense of community.

Thanks for tacking the (ehem) questions, in the face of such adversity. ;-)
