stay-at-home mom goes back to work and discovers you really can’t have it all - a haiku
Posted by bon under stuff stuff, stuff to be done
in seventeen succinct syllables, my first day at work.
i can has whole day at desk?
yays! but no bloggingz?
oh noes! cruel joke, world.
clearly, my calling as a poet is clarion. but my calling to sit for eight largely unbroken hours in front of a computer with no diaper changing, no singing, no Richard Scarry books, no kissing, and no blogging? it’s going to take some adjustment.
back to my boy, whom i might have missed a little. ![]()

I can only imagine! Enjoy your boy.
June 18th, 2007 at 9:19 pm
Oh, but surely you can
blog“work” at your computer, no?Maybe in the second week?
June 18th, 2007 at 9:29 pm
I’m with Slouching Mom. Maybe just a tiny bit of blogging?
June 18th, 2007 at 9:37 pm
Happy back-to-work you! I have great faith in your ability to blog at work (it’s good typing practice), or at least catch up on web-based research (read - other people’s blogs and entertainment news). No kissing though, that’s no ok. Find some hunky co-worker to lure into the cloakroom:).

I hope you like your new job. The first few weeks are always the hardest - even when you don’t have an adorable baby waiting for you.

I’m glad the first day went well!
I have to admit I cheat and read blogs ocassionally. Keeps me sane.
June 19th, 2007 at 12:53 am
But breaks are clear for surfing, right? Right?
June 19th, 2007 at 1:05 am
What kind of work is it where there is no blogging? You jest, yes?
I am guessing O has been kissed more times tonight than he thought strictly necessary… Tough life that kid has.
June 19th, 2007 at 1:26 am
Yeah I lasted a couple days with no blogging when I first went back to work. But I couldn’t last long.
June 19th, 2007 at 1:36 am
Oh no! No blogging…ah, give it a week or so!
Enjoy your boy!
June 19th, 2007 at 1:37 am
Hey now, a little blogging has got to be ok! Go on, the boss isn’t looking. . .
;-p
June 19th, 2007 at 1:50 am
Thanks for stopping by my blog the other day and for the lovely comment. Good luck with the new job. I’m sure O will miss you immensely but fortunately children are very resilient and in time you will both adjust.

I’ll need to catch up on your history here, but I’m thinking you’ve been off work for awhile, no? Best of luck to you as you move on forward; hope you can blog a wee bit during the long days!
June 19th, 2007 at 4:34 am
ah yes, sister…now see…it’s not all bad.
and we all know you’ll figure out the blogging.
June 19th, 2007 at 4:45 am
erm, i’m confused. did we have a good day at work?? or a not so good day??? hmmm…
June 19th, 2007 at 4:46 am
ps. i like the poetry. a particularly catchy title…
June 19th, 2007 at 5:28 am
Hrm.. I could never get a job anywhere near a computer.. I wouldn’t get any work done. It’s not blogging if your just reading… it’s just reading… at least that’s what I tell the laundry pile that stares at me accusingly when I sit down to steal a few moments.

Congratulations on the new “beginning” and for stoically getting through the day at work! No blogging?! Maybe you could “accidentally” give us all your boss’s e-mail address/home address (and any other address that could serve the purpose) and we could all naggingly hound him/her until he/she gives in and you’re able to finally “release”, at work, all those amazing words and ideas that you need to keep trapped inside you until you get home?! Oh and since we’re at it, we may as well ask for a good ol’ bottle of red for you too. Can’t hurt! We’re having withdrawal symptoms from not reading you already…..Hang in there Bon, you’ll be fine. In a little while you’ll have that boss of yours wrapped around your finger and you’ll be able to extort blogging privileges like a natural!
June 19th, 2007 at 11:27 am
man….half my blogging is done from work! It’s the only quiet time I get!
I bet he missed his mommy too.
June 19th, 2007 at 1:51 pm
Blogging with toddlers isn’t that easy, either, so this day was coming one way or another.
For example - this comment may be the only writing I’m able to do ALL DAY. Freaking kids.
June 19th, 2007 at 6:23 pm
Ahhh, I remember my first day back to work. It sucked to be away and yet it was a nice break.
Hopefully it will get better for you.
June 19th, 2007 at 6:34 pm
I’m reading your blog from my work desk right now - it feels like a beautiful way to “fight the power”, so to speak.
Maybe you could eventually find a few minutes to squeeze in blog reading? Unless they have blogs blocked. Really evil workplaces sometimes do that, you know.
June 19th, 2007 at 7:15 pm
That poem rocked!
June 19th, 2007 at 8:17 pm
If not for work, I would get no blogging done at all.
June 19th, 2007 at 11:18 pm
that is a real change of pace, huh?
when are you going to tell us about this job? nosily yours, mimi
June 20th, 2007 at 2:26 am
Happy back to work day!
June 20th, 2007 at 7:14 pm
Your poem is much better than any I could’ve come up with!! And it made me laugh!!
June 21st, 2007 at 3:41 am
I’m sick. And I like to be utterly miserable when sick. But that poem made me laugh.
I will go back to being miserable and sick now, thank you very much.

“fuck the dog at work by blogging. . .”
Dude, you crack me up!
It has to be weird, this transition. But it’s gotta be fun!
