photo essay for the cure
Posted by bon under issue stuff, mama-baby stuff
the conferences were a success, thank you muchly. we wrapped the last session by 1 pm this afternoon, hugged the world’s nicest webcast pioneer (and his lovely wife) goodbye, and made it downtown, O & i, for the start of the annual Run for the Cure, the Canadian run against breast cancer.

this is the third year that my mom and her friend Henry and i have walked the course together. Oscar’s been with us every time…the very first year, i was only a little pregnant with him. last year, he slept almost the whole way. this year, he was good company, fascinated, smiling and waving, toddling about beforehand trying to give all the dogs there a drink from his sippy cup.

i was happy that we finished up all the work stuff in time to go…i wanted to walk for Whymommy, as part of her team. and for my grandmother, my dad’s mother, who died in 1988. and like i said last year, for Oscar. in hopes that he will never walk alone in this run, this tradition of ours, in the throng of white and pink tshirts wearing a sign - like so many today that made my eyes blur, suddenly, with tears - that says “for my mom.”

For those of us who have trouble doing it, thank you. I can’t bring myself to sit in that tide of pain and terror, but my heart melts a little looking at the crowds.

This past June was the first that I declined participating in Relay for Life since my mother and sister were diagnosed with breast cancer, five years ago. Even though I knew from previous years that it was a very uplifting, moving event, I thought that having just lost a friend 30 days earlier, it would be too much for me. Seeing these pictures, and all your smiles, I feel I can look forward to such events again. It’s good to let hope back into my heart.

Wow, what a terrific turnout. So glad that you and Oscar did it together.
A few years ago, SwingDaddy rode the Ride for the Roses century (100 miles to support the Lance Armstrong Foundation for cancer survivorship). There were several shorter rides that same day, and the memory that always brings tears to my eyes is this one: A man riding solo on a tandem bike and his young son riding his little bike along side, both with “in memory of” signs. Darn it, I just started crying again.
It felt good to be there and help raise money for the cause.

I love picture #1; it gives a true sense of the hundreds, if not thousands, that turned out to “Run for the Cure” in this small Maritime city of Charlottetown. It speaks volumes of how many in this province have been touched by this disease. Thank you Bon, for participating. It’s wonderful to see the pics of you and your family. You are beautiful; physically and in the ways of the heart.

May I also add; when I look at your mom, I see where your gorgeous smile comes from.

I’m with you. I can’t look at the back of people’s shirts with their dedications without tearing up.

Thank you for doing this. And for knowing how lucky you are to be able to walk with your mom and your son.
We are lucky when we have our family still with us.

I hope you don’t mind, I have linked your page to my pink post.

Oh my goodness, Oscar is too cute with his blond curls! My middle boy had those same monkey shoes. I kept them and admire them still!
Loved the photos, and good for you for participating.
